New Delhi: Concerned over increasing number of road accidents involving two-wheelers riders in the state, West Bengal government has started the movement of 'no helmet no petrol' in the state's retail petrol outlets.

Under the drive, two wheeler riders not wearing helmets are denied petrol at pumps and necessary instructions in this regard have been issued to oil companies and petrol pump owners.

Many other state governments like Odisha, Kerala, Hyderabad, Jammu and Kashmir, and some districts in Madhya Pradesh have encouraged the movement of 'no helmet no petrol' to tackle the number of road accidents deaths in the states.

Two wheelers account for 25% of total road crash deaths. A study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences says 46 percent of riders without a helmet die of injuries when they skid and fall, while the corresponding number for those dying despite wearing a helmet is 12 percent.
