India vs Australia, Pune Test: Valiant Virat Kohli takes blow on the chin, hails Aussie performance

New Delhi: India's undefeated run finally ended in the 20th match with Australia thrashing Virat Kohli & Co by a huge 333-run margin in Pune on Saturday. Admitting to his side's below-par performance, Indian skipper took the blow on the chin and admitted that they have been outplayed by the visitors.

"It's been a good run. Good to see the support. We got outplayed in this game. We got to take it on the chin, accept that they outplayed us," Kohli said in the post-match presentation.

The 28-year-old, who had helped India reclaim the number one spot in the ICC Test ranking with a series of virtouso performance both as the captain of the outfit and also a batsman, however, reckoned that their batting display in this Test was "worst in last two years".

India were all out for a meagre 105 in the first innings, then in the second essay, they could increase the total by only two runs in response to Australia's 260 and 285.

"It was our worst batting display in the last two years. We need to see what we did wrong. They exploited it better than us. They put us under pressure throughout and deserved to win this game," he said.

He went on to add that there's no excuse for such poor performance, specially playing at home, which has always been regarded as a fortress. But he was generous in defeat too, in his appreciation of the Aussies.

"We've had two really bad sessions and to pull it back against a quality side is very difficult. No excuses. Sometimes, you have to take your hat off and tell the opposition well done," he stressed.

The match ended inside three days, with man of the match Steve O'Keefe claiming a match-haul of 12 wickets – six in each innings. Aussie skipper Steve Smith also scored a classic hundred in the second innings on a difficult Pune top to reinforce his stature as one of the best batsmen today.

With the win, Australia have taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. The second match will be played at Bangalore, starting March 4.
