Afghanistan cricket team created history on Monday, posting their first-ever win over Pakistan in ODI cricket in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The entire Afghanistan cricket team took a ‘lap of honour’ around the Chepauk stadium to thank the 20,000-plus crowd who supported them in their match against Babar Azam’s side.

The celebrations didn’t stop of the field as the Afghanistan cricket team were seen dancing on Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan’s famous ‘Lungi dance’ song from the movie ‘Chennai Express’ in the team bus. The video was shared by Afghanistan ‘mystery girl’ and influencer Wazhma Ayoubi and went viral on social media.

“Since I can't post my video of dancing, here is a fun one from our #Atalan. But rest assured, I danced with joy and will continue dancing for days to come, celebrating this sweet victory. Dance your hearts out, our heroes. You deserve all the happiness. Mashallah,” Ayoubi tweeted on social media platform ‘X’.

It was Afghanistan’s third win in ODI World Cup tournament, the other two coming against Scotland in 2015 World Cup and against world champions England in the 2023 edition in Delhi earlier this month. It was also the 2nd highest total posted by Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup after the 288 they scored against West Indies in 2019 World Cup.

Afghanistan also broke record of India, completing the highest successful run-chase against India. The Indian cricket team held the previous record having chased down 274 in Centurion in the 2003 World Cup.

“This is a big moment for the whole team, the whole of Afghanistan. We’ve been waiting for 10-12 years for such a moment and to win one game in the big event against Pakistan. Last 3 months we worked very hard, this is a lovely moment today,” Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi said after the match.

“We beat England and now Pakistan, everyone is in a good mood. We can not only defend, but also chase well now. This win is the favorite, we have played them 7-8 games against them and in the last moment we have always lost. The way Ibrahim and Gurbaz started, that gave us the momentum. We didn’t lose back to back wickets till the end. We thought the surface would be like the NZ game, but it was much easier. I think our bowlers did very well to restrict them to that kind of total,” Nabi added.
