Eid-ul-Fitr 2018: Moon sighted in UAE

The holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, also known as Eid-al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is celebrated widely by Muslims around the globe. This auspicious day is celebrated by breaking the 30-day long fast with a grand celebration. Eid-ul-Fitr is the first and only day in the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted to fast. The celebrations of the festival depend purely upon the sighting of the moon.

As per a report in khaleejtimes.com, The International Astronomy Center has announced moon sighting in UAE. This means that Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday in UAE.

The report says that the crescent of Shawwal moon has been observed in Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain.

However, the report says that the final decision with regards to celebrations will be announced by the moon-sighting committee after the Maghrib prayer (offered at the sunset).

Eid holds a great significance for Muslims who eagerly wait for the festival after keeping Rozas for good 29-30 days during Ramzan.

The day of Eid falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal depending upon the sighting of the moon the previous night. The fasting ends and people look forward to Eid celebrations the day after. On the day of Eid al-Fitr, Muslims offer a particular salat (Islamic prayer) consisting of two rakats (units) which is usually offered in an open field or large hall.
