He also expressed happiness over the enthusiasm and the patience shown by people to bear "limited inconvenience for a greater good".
In a surprise move, Modi had on Tuesday night announced withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from circulation in a bid to flush out black money.
Following this decision of the government, banks across India were closed on Wednesday and reopened on Thursday to witness millions of customers thronging banks, some since early Thursday morning, to exchange their old notes.
"So happy to learn that citizens are expressing their gratitude to bankers and getting notes exchanged in a very patient & orderly manner," the Prime Minister said in the tweet.

"It is also heartening to learn that people are actively volunteering to help senior citizens withdraw money and exchange their currency. Such warmth, enthusiasm and the patience to bear limited inconvenience for a greater good is indeed very heartening," Modi further tweeted.
