Mumbai: It’s that time of the year in the Hindu lunar calendar when people pay homage to their ancestors by performing Shraadha and Tarpan. This phase which is spread over a fortnight is called Pitru Paksha. This year, it started on September 16 and will end on September 30.

The last day is known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya amavasya, following which Navaratri starts.

Interestingly, two different calendars are followed by people in North and South India. Yet, the days fall on more or less the same day according to the Gregorian calendar.

In South India, according to the Amavasyant calendar, the Pitru Paksha falls in the lunar month of Bhadrapada on a full moon day or a day after. And according to the Purnimant calendar in North India, the Pitru Paksha falls in the lunar month of Ashwin.

But what is Pitra Dosha?

Pitru Dosh is often believed to be a curse invited by angering our ancestors. If we fail to please our ancestors by performing the Pitru Paksha tarpan, then we may invite the wrath of our dead relatives.

Hence, it is important to perform Shraadha rituals religiously year on year to please and pacify our ancestors.

Do you have Pitra Dosha in your kundali?

If you are facing insurmountable problems in your life, then you may have the Pitra Dosha in your kundali. No matter how hard you try, you may not be able to succeed in your endeavours and might be a recipient of miseries and sorrow.

You must do the Shraadha rituals and tarpan if you are facing any of these following problems:

  • Chronic diseases – If you are constantly suffering from chronic diseases and despite treatment, you continue to fall ill.
  • Unsuccessful in professional endeavours because of constant hurdles that act as a roadblock to success.
  • Unhappy married life – constant friction with your spouse.
  • Not yet attained parenthood after years of marriage – If you have remained childless even after several years of marriage.
  • Loss of wealth and property – If you are at a loss financially.

The best way to eliminate Pitra Dosha would be to perform the Shraadha rituals after consulting your family priest to seek forgiveness from your ancestors.
