'Udta Punjab' row: Arun Jaitley to introduce 'radical changes' in Central Board of Film Certification

New Delhi: Amid the escalating controversy surrounding censorship of Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh starrer 'Udta Punjab', Information and Broadcasting Minister of India Arun Jaitley has announced that fresh amendments will be made in the certification board.

According to a report in TOI, Jaitley has vouched for introduction of ''liberal'' norms and “radical changes'' in the CBFC.

'Udta Punjab', a film that deals with the drug menace in the state of Punjab was subjected to as many as 89 cuts by the Central Board of Film certification (CBFC) recently.

The makers of the movie have appealed to the Film certificate Appelate Tribunal (FCAT).

Jaitley was quoted as saying in the report, "I won't say it is overboard. I don't know this case because I have not seen this film in question."

He added, "You will probably have a system where you will have to have a certificate. The correct word is certification and not censorship. Certification norms will have to be liberal."

The board has been maintaining that the film has a lot of drug related scenes in the particular state which needs to be treated with these cuts.

FCAT will be hearing a case on June 17.
