Assam's Majuli island titled as world's largest river island by Guinness World Records!

New Delhi: The Guinness World Records recently named Majuli, Assam's heritage island on Brahmaputra, as the largest river island in the world.

It has toppled Brazil's Marajo island that held the previous record.

Majuli covers an area of around 880 km² (340 miles²) of the Brahmaputra river system. The land had suffered massive erosion due to the frequent flooding of the Brahmaputra. In the last 30-40 years it is estimated that it has lost around one third of its total area

The island has a population of about 160,000 people and are mainly dominated by Mising tribes, Deori and Sonowal Kachri tribes. The island is also a home to Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture.
