Ahmedabad/New Delhi: Surmounting the incumbency factor, attempted caste-based social engineering by the Congress and perceived anger over the GST, the BJP clinched the Gujarat Assembly polls sixth time in a row on Monday, winning 99 seats in the 182-member House.
The saffron party's tally, however, was 16 less than 115 in the previous election. It is also for the first time it has slipped below the 100 mark since the BJP formed its maiden government on its own in 1995. It was in a coalition government with the Janata Dal in 1990 but the two parted ways soon.
The Congress, which had won 61 seats in the previous elections, made handsome gains, adding 16 seats to its tally.
Results declared for all the 182 seats in Gujarat - BJP wins 99 seats, Congress wins 77, 1 seat won by NCP. Bhartiya Tribal Party and Independent win 2 and 3 seats respectively.
This is a blessing by the people to the leadership of PM Modi and his government. It shows that they support his vision for development and the vision for the future of India, says Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.
We received 49% votes, more than what was predicted in exit polls. This is a victory for development. It was tough to change development into victory but our workers did it. Congress must introspect what went wrong for them, says Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Congratulations to the BJP, the winner in HP and Gujarat. Best wishes to the new governments.

PM Modi asks BJP workers to raise slogan - 'jeetega bhai jeetega, vikas hi jeetega' (only development will win), says PM Modi. Party workers chant after him.
I once again congratulate the party workers for the win in Gujarat. This is a unique and historical victory, PM says once again.
PM also talks about his vision of 'new India'.
We took three decades to remove the poison of casteism from Gujarat. We took Gujarat on the path of 'sabka saath, sabka vikas', says PM.
I want to tell the people of Gujarat that it's great you have rejected the politics of caste. However, you have to be careful. You have voted for us, still I am daring to say this - all Gujaratis are one. Forget what has happened, he adds.
Six crore Gujaratis are one and they want to move ahead on the path of progress. Let every Gujarati embrace one another, we cannot and won't be divided... only think of unity and brotherhood, says PM Modi.
After 2014, discourse in the nation is about development only. Opposition is free to celebrate when BJP loses, but for now they will have to agree that we have the courage to take decisions and change the country, says PM.
We have the guts to take tough decisions. Our intention is clean, adds PM.
We hold elections every year in different states and people campaign differently, but development is the need of the hour. BJP has brought in the developments that were required in the country, says PM.
There may be differences in opinion on development, but people of the nation will never accept politicising development, says PM.
I compliment the people of Gujarat. There was so much misinformation. Congress was hatching all kinds of conspiracies, says PM Modi.
Poeple from the Opposition were busy campaigning, Congress struggled and made plans to defeat us in Gujarat, says PM.
After I left Gujarat on becoming PM, it gives me immense satisfaction that my colleagues there continued the good work, says PM.
The continuous win in Gujarat on the plank of development is unique in the history of India, says PM.
BJP won all the seats it contested in 1989 Lok Sabha polls. We won most of the seats we contested in 1990. In 1995, in 1998, in 2002, in 2007 and in 2012 we won. We won most seats in Lok Sabha polls too, adds PM.
Gujarat poll results are historical. In this day and age, for a party to keep winning for so long, says PM.
The results in Himachal Pradesh show that if you don't do development and are embroiled in all wrong acts then after 5 years people will not accept you, says PM Modi.
It was said before Gujarat polls that the BJP would lose because of GST, says PM Modi. However, these elections have proved that the country is ready for reforms.
I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, says PM Modi. He adds, "I am grateful to the people of Gujarat and Himachal as they chose the path of development."
We have never won elections and today we have reached to having 19 BJP govt states across the country, says Shah.
This is not the sole victory that we have achieved, with this we have progressed from where we were in the previous elections, says Shah.
Shah addresses the media at BJP headquarters in Delhi.
At the onset, I would like to thank the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for this victory, says Shah.
Election Commission of India was approached for counting at two booths in different constituencies. ECI has given instructions to conduct counting through VVPAT in those two particular booths, says BB Swain, Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat.

Personal loss is not of much importance. The gain that victory has brought to state BJP is important. Thankful to people of the state for voting for BJP. In politics, sometimes one wins, sometimes one loses. I was not expecting to lose, I will do an analysis, says PK Dhumal.
