Covid-19 Cases In India Jumps To 423 In Single Day; Total Cases Over 3,000

India had earlier recorded 594 fresh COVID-19 infections while the number of active cases increased to 2,669 from 2,311. The death toll climbed to 5,33,327 with six more people -- three from Kerala, two from Karnataka and one from Punjab -- succumbing to the viral disease.

The emergence of JN.1 sub-variant of COVID-19 has caused concerns across the country. While the World Health Organisation has asked not to worry, the Covid 19 cases in India have started increasing once again. New Covid cases in India has crossed 400 mark in one day with the country recording 423 cases in the last 24 hours. Of these, 266 cases were registered in Kerala and 70 in Karnataka. In the last 24 hours, five new cases of Covid were reported in Delhi as well. With this, the total active cases in India has climbed to 3420 while four more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours- two from Kerala, one from Karnataka and one from Rajasthan.

The JN.1 is a variant of the ‘pirola’ variant BA 2.86. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest. IMA COVID Task Force Dr Rajeev Jayadevan on December 21 mentioned that the new strain can be problematic for people of old age and those with multiple comorbidities.

The death toll climbed to 5,33,331 with four more people succumbing to the viral disease.

In the latest epidemiological update on Friday, the UN health body reported over 850,000 new cases worldwide in the 28-day period from November 20 to December 17.

The number of new deaths decreased by 8 per cent as compared to the previous 28-day period, with over 3,000 new fatalities reported. As of December 17, over 772 million confirmed cases and nearly seven million deaths have been reported globally.

Covid-19 LIVE Updates: 5 Covid-19 Positive Cases Reported From West Bengal 

Among the five affected cases, three are hospitalised, while two are under home isolation. Among the three hospitalised, one is a six-month old child, who came from Bihar to West Bengal with his parents. The child is currently kept in ventilation.

The other two who are hospitalised are reportedly having comorbidities, informed sources from the state health department.

Sources from the state health department said the genome sequencing of all five of them will be done to trace whether these are the cases of new sub-variant JN.1. The forthcoming festival seasons of Christmas and New Year, which might result in the gathering of large numbers of people at a place and at a time, have become a major concern for the state health department, reports IANS.
