New Delhi: In yet another attempt to win over the hearts and provide job opportunities to the youth, the Home Ministry has decided to hire around 16,000 locals from Jammu and Kashmir in various wings of India’s armed forces.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir, in a written reply, told Rajya Sabha that police are taking initiatives like sports events, community policing, counselling of miscreants to engage the locals with mainstream society.

In order to generate employment for youth of J&K, the government has also approved additional recruitment of 10,000 SPOs, recruitment of around 5381 personnel in 5 new India Reserve Battalions, recruitment of 1079 personnel of CAPFs and Assam Rifles.

The CRPF, one of the main central forces battling militancy and street protests in Jammu and Kashmir, in July said that there were fewer stone-pelting incidents in the Valley in comparison to last year.

Almost one terrorist incident occurred on an average every day in the conflict-hit Jammu and Kashmir this year till July 23, indicating no sign of let-up in Pakistan-led activities in the valley, according to a Home Ministry report.

According to the report, a total of 184 violent terrorist incidents took place in the state between January 1 and July 23, 2017, as against 155 incidents during the same period last year. In 2016, there were a total of 322 terrorist incidents. The number of such incidents was 208 in 2015 and 222 in 2014.
