Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M Karunanidhi on Friday underwent tracheotomy procedure to optimise breathing and his condition is now stable, doctors said.

Karunanidhi, 92, was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on Thursday night due with breathing difficulty as well as throat and lung infection, said the hospital.

"He is stable, on antibiotics and is being treated by a team of doctors," the hospital said.

As per Kalaignar Seithigal, a pro-DMK Tamil news channel, Karunanidhi briefly watched popular 1995 Rajinikanth film "Baashha" on his laptop at the hospital.

Meanwhile, leaders of political parties, including Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Su Thirunavukkarasar, former TNCC chief EVKS Elangovan, CPI senior leader Tha Pandian, PMK leader and Dharmapuri Lok Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss, and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan visited Kauvery Hospital and enquired about the health of the DMK patriarch.

Thirumavalavan told reporters that the DMK chief has improved and was now able to sit on a chair.

Karunanidhi's second spell of hospitalisation this month comes after a short interval.

It was on December 7 that Karunanidhi was discharged from the hospital after being admitted on December 1.
