Delhi odd-even car plan ends today, should it be extended? Delhi Odd-Even Scheme Ends Today

New Delhi: The 15-day trial period of much-publicised car rationing formula introduced by the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi officially ends on Friday.

The odd-even car rationing scheme, which was aimed at curbing the rising pollution in the national capital, has evoked mixed response fron several quarters with some demanding its extension while some calling it a failure.

The Delhi government, which called the scheme a success, said yesterday that a decision for the second phase of the experiment is likely to be taken in the review meeting scheduled for Monday.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has backed the scheme and said that the odd-even scheme of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government was a success to some extent, as the idea had appealed to the people.

A bench made the observation in response to the submission of Delhi Traffic Police that the scheme was successful mainly due to the 2000 rupees fine payable for violation and added that the Delhi government was successful in publicising the concept and making it appealing to the masses.

The Supreme Court had yesterday refused the urgent hearing of a plea challenging the High Court judgement and Delhi Government's notification on the odd-even formula and ruled that the experiment will not be cancelled.

Terming the plea as a 'publicity stunt', the Supreme Court said, "People are dying due to pollution. We are doing car-pooling and you want to challenge it."
