Panaji: The Goa government is likely to impose a fine of Rs 10,000 for consuming liquor in open places such as beaches, public roads, state and national highways. These places will be declared “No alcohol” zone.

According to the Indian Express, the Goa Excise Duty Bill (2016) is likely to have the provision for the hefty fine, which is aimed at addressing the grievances of travellers over the nuisance created by drunken revelers.

By inserting section 10B to the Goa Excise Duty, the state may declare a ban on the consumption of liquor in open spaces such as beaches, public roads, state and national highway, the report added.

The government hopes to collect an additional revenue of Rs 25 lakhs by doubling the penalty from the existing Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, the report said.
