New Delhi: Liver cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver does not function properly due to long-term damage. While most of us think that alcohol and drugs are the main reasons behind the disease, there are also many lifestyle and physiological factors that lead to liver cirrhosis.

Here are some conditions that are the main culprits of the disease:

Repeated heart failure

People with repeated heart failure have high risk of developing liver cirrhosis as their liver have become more stiff. Liver stiffness is the measure of how weak the liver has become after a heart failure and if not treated properly, it can lead to liver cirrhosis.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Liver cirrhosis are also caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity etc. Fat deposits and cholesterol builds-up in the liver, blocks the arteries, thereby causing scarring of healthy liver tissue that leads to liver cirrhosis.

Medications

Many might not know that high intake of medicines containing heavy metals damages the liver slowly and lead to cirrhosis. Even prolonged use of antidepressants and some antibiotics can also up the risk of liver cirrhosis.

Autoimmune hepatitis

Autoimmune hepatitis is the condition when the body’s own immune system attacks the cells of the liver leading to scarring and inflammation.
