New Delhi: The newly elected office bearers of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah and discussed various issues concerning the varsity and its future plan to address them.
"We met Prime Minister and the BJP president today and discussed the issues faced by students in the university. Modiji asked us to focus on empowering students and not just student unions," DUSU president Satender Awana said.
DUSU is led by BJP's student's wing Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi parishad (ABVP) which swept the students union polls for the second consecutive year.
The 20-minute long meeting took place at the PM's residence. The DUSU office bearers were also joined by JNUSU Joint Secretary Saurabh Kumar Sharma who is the only ABVP nominee in the cabinet.
Senior ABVP leaders including the National General Secretary Shreehari Borikar and Delhi State Secretary Saket Bahuguna were also present during the meeting.
"We discussed how we plan to go ahead with the issues that we had raised during the poll campaigns and the top leaders made few suggestions and guided us," Bahuguna said.
In the elections held last week, the ABVP bagged the posts of president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary defeating National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidates with a margin of over 4,500 votes each in the fiercely fought contest.
ABVP's Satender Awana and Sunny Dedha were elected president and vice president of DUSU respectively. Anjali Rana won the post of Secretary and Chhattarpal Yadav was elected joint secretary.
The party also made a comeback at the left-dominated JNU campus after 14 years with Sharma wining the Joint Secretary post.
