Jaipur: This year's heat wave has already been dubbed as one of the most intense ever. And the temperature readings in Rajasthan's Phalodi have shattered all previous records.

The temperature in the small city, located in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, crossed the 50-degree mark and settled at a sizzling 51 degrees Celsius - or 123.8 degrees Fahrenheit - in the afternoon.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this is the highest ever temperature recorded in India.

The previous record was set in 1886 when the temperature soared to 50.6 degrees Celsius in Pachpadra, located just 125 miles away from Phalodi.

The development came even as the IMD on Thursday issued a "severe heat wave warning" for several parts of the country.

According to IMD, temperatures will stay above average for most parts of India till at least May 27.

Last year, some 2,500 people were killed in 2015 due to heat wave.
