Srinagar: Brave BSF jawan Nitin Kumar died fighting armed terrorists when they tried to attack his heavily fortified camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla town around midnight on Sunday.

Though he was bleeding profusely, he didn't give up. He held his fort till the reinforcements arrived, KK Sharma, the Director General of Border Security Force (BSF), said on Monday.

Militants tried to infiltrate the 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp of the army where the BSF constable and his fellow jawans were deployed to secure the morcha, Sharma said.

Because of the alertness of BSF men this attack was foiled. “We lost our boy, Nitin who was a very brave soldier," he said in his first remarks on the terror strike in Kashmir's Baramulla town last night.

"Despite being hit, Nitin kept on firing from his position. Unfortunately he lost too much blood to be saved. His alertness along with that of the others ensured that the militants had no option but to retreat," India Today quoted Sharma as saying.

Sharma, who is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 1982 batch with Rajasthan as his cadre, took over as mettle of the world's largest paramilitary force on February 29 this year.

Describing the current situation, he said, "Western border tense right now. But I want to assure the nation, we will give more than befitting response if attacked. Pakistan is preparing their defence or may be further offence. We do not know. But their plans will be foiled".

The BSF is mandated to guard not only the country's border with Pakistan but also the one with Bangladesh.

"We have always been alert but now our alert levels have peaked," the report quoted Sharma as saying.
