Japan's cabinet approves climate change adaptation plan

Japan's Cabinet on Friday approved a plan for measures towards reducing global warming.

Tokyo: Japan's Cabinet on Friday approved a plan for measures towards reducing global warming.

The plan is to be presented at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Paris scheduled to be held from November 30 to December 11, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Government offices compiled measures in seven categories aimed at lessening the impact of global warming.

In agriculture, the measures include developing rice and vegetable varieties that can thrive at higher temperatures, and growing fruit at higher altitudes.

In terms of disaster preparedness, the plan aims to more strictly manage levees and dams to prevent floods and landslides. The measures called for improving evacuation plans and creating communities in areas with low disaster risk.

In healthcare, the government plans to step up awareness campaigns for heatstroke. It is encouraging the introduction of robots and information technology to help agricultural workers avoid the condition.

The government also aims to eradicate mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as dengue fever, and determine where outbreaks take place.
