New Delhi: China's pollution woes seems to worsen as the sky over China's Nanjing city on Wednesday turned purple due to dangerously high concentration of PM2.5 levels.

A lavender-coloured sky was seen by city dwellers which made them worried. Nanjing's purple haze seemed to be the result of a refraction process caused by the light of setting sun filtered through heavy smog.

Meanwhile, social media users were abuzz with the pink smog phenomenon posting photos of smog blending into sunset glow in Nanjing.

Yesterday, roughly 50 cities in northern and eastern China have issued air pollution alerts in the most recent bout of smog, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

This is the second time Beijing issued red alert after the first ever one on December 6.
