New Delhi: Images taken from space, courtesy US space agency NASA, give viewers a new insight into the working of the space agency and also shed light on new developments.
With every image that NASA releases, whether it is a satellite image of a mountain, an ocean, a glacier, or images beamed back by it's rovers and spacecrafts that are busy in their planet probe missions – Curiosity rover on Mars, Cassini spacecraft on Saturn and New Horizons on Pluto, its numerous satellites, et al, viewers and space enthusiasts are treated to a new discovery.
This time, NASA's Aqua satellite has sent in its image of the day, which NASA has dutifully released.
The fascinating image is of the Sea of Okhotsk with sea ice and cloud streets spread out far and beyond.
As per NASA, cloud streets are long parallel bands of cumulus clouds that form when cold air blows over warmer waters and a warmer air layer (temperature inversion) rests over the top of both.
The image was taken on February 8th, 2016, through the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite.
Aqua (EOS PM-1) is a multi-national scientific research satellite orbiting the Earth, to study the precipitation, evaporation and cycling of water. It is the second major component of the Earth Observing System (EOS) preceded by Terra, launched in 1999, followed by Aura, which was launched in 2004.
