Chennai: At least three containers carrying Rs 570 crore cash were stopped on Saturday by Election Commission authorities in Tiripur district of Tamil Nadu.
Though the officials did not open the containers, the drivers told the authorities that the containers carrying cash belonged to the State Bank of India and was being transported to Vijaywada.
Talking to ANI report, Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni confirmed the news and said, "Three containers carrying at least Rs 570 crore was stopped at Tiripur today. The cash was being transferred to Vijaywada. The security personnel were not in uniform and also were not carrying complete documents.
The Election Commission has formed an investigating committee to look into the matter.
"We have asked senior officials of State Bank of India to look into the matter. A special team has also been formed to investigate the incident," said Lakhoni.
According to reports, over Rs 100 crore cash have been seized by the Election Commission so far in the poll-bound Tamil Nadu.
The state will go to assembly polls in a single phase on May 16. The counting of votes will be held on May 19.
