Shaktiman, the horse injured during protest in Uttarakhand, needs amputation: Police

Haldwani: Police horse Shaktiman, who was allegedly attacked during a protest in Uttarakhand and received multiple fractures, will have its leg amputated today due to medical condition, according to reports.

"Doctors were of view that horse might lose its life by tomorrow morning due to spread of gangrene, so we decided to amputate its fractured leg urgently, Uttarakhand DGP BS Sidhu told ANI.

"Doctors diagnosed that blood supply to injured portion had stopped so leg needed to be amputated," Sidhu said.

Shaktiman had earlier went through a five-hour surgery by a team of 10 doctors. However, it failed to stand on its four despite repeated attempts by its caretakers. The horse was today visited by BJP lawmaker Ganesh Joshi, who is accused of hitting it with a stick, and thus crippling it.
