Kolkata: Two passengers were killed while six were left injured after two coaches of Capital Express train derailed near Samuktala station in Alipurduar district late on Tuesday night.

While there were no casualties reported initially, Northeast Frontier Railway tweeted about the death of two passengers.

Tweeting about the accident, Ministry of Railways said, "Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has directed chairman, Railway Board to ensure immediate relief, monitor situation, take appropriate action. As per information coming from site, prima facie cause of minor derailment is jumping of red signal by driver. Thorough inquiry will be subsequently conducted and action will be taken against the guilty."

The derailment took place close to Samuktala Road Station in West Bengal's Alipurduar district, which is about 720 kilometres from Kolkata, around 9 pm.

Notably, two weeks ago, 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna express ran off the tracks near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, killing over 100 people.
