Agra: In a shocking incident, a woman from northeast mortgaged her seven-year-old son for Rs 2000 as she didn't had enough money to pay for her husband's funeral.
The woman, in her 20s, was employed as a labourer at Rs 40 per day at a tea estate near Dimapur in Nagaland.
Last year in October, her husband, who was also working as a labourer, died of fever and other medical complications. The woman did not enough money to pay for his funeral, and thus mortgaged one of her sons to a local moneylender in exchange of Rs 2,000.
After trying for several months to gather money to let off her son from the moneylender, the woman was convinced by her brother-in-law that he would help her find a job in Agra.
However, on reaching Agra, his brother-in-law abandoned her and left her with her two other children to fend for herself..
On Saturday evening, the woman was spotted by one of the social workers, Paras, who along with few other workers contacted the police in Nagaland.
The woman shared her ordeal and revealed how she had been surviving on food left on rubbish heaps and also getting physically assaulted by a local shopkeeper on one day over charges of stealing a water bottle.
The woman also claimed that she tried to approach the city police for help but was turned away by them.
Paras along with local traders conducted a donation drive and collected Rs 3000 and some other provisions for the woman for her immediate expenses and also contacted the Nagaland police to help her out.
The Nagaland police told the social workers to send the woman back home and that they would take over the case and try to locate her son.
On Sunday, the woman with her two children boarded the Brahmaputra Mail to her home. RPF and GRP escorted the trio on their journey to Dimapur.
Meanwhile, the police in Dimapur have launched an investigation in the case and have begun the process of tracing the boy.
