New Delhi: As millions across the country throng to banks to exchange old notes following the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said ATMs will starting functioning from midnight and people can withdraw the new currencies.
Talking to CNN-NEWS 18, Jaitley said there was no need to panic as there was sufficient cash and that ATMs would start functioning from midnight tonight.
"ATMs will start functioning from today (Thursday) midnight. People can withdraw the new currency notes," Jaitley told TV channel in an interview.
He also assured that there was no cash crunch as the government has been printing currency note for months.
There is an adequate amount of new currencies for distribution as the government has been printing them for months, he said.
As for the big rush on day one of bank opening after the demonetisation of notes, Jaitley said it was inevitable.
He also assured consumers that everything would be back to normal functioning in a few days time.
