Indian Railways (IR) is set to enter a new era of mobility. After the transition from diesel to electric locomotives, the Ministry of Railways is gearing up to introduce hydrogen-powered trains in the country soon.
Manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), India’s first-ever hydrogen train will provide huge benefits in terms of green transportation technology and support zero carbon emission goals as a clean energy source.
According to an ET Now report, the Ministry of Railways allocated Rs 2800 crore to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains in fiscal year 2023-24.
India’s first hydrogen trainset is likely to be launched by the end of March 31, 2025. “We are working on the flagship project for the hydrogen fuel cell train set. Hydrogen fuel cell coaches are currently being produced at ICF. The train set is likely to be turned out by March 25,” ET Now quoted U Subba Rao, General Manager (GM), ICF, as saying.
India has recently developed a hydrogen-powered train engine with the highest capacity in the world.
Many nations have built hydrogen trains with capacities ranging from 500 to 600 horsepower (HP), while India has achieved a breakthrough by developing an engine with a capacity of 1,200 horsepower (HP).
According to ET Now, the inaugural train has been allocated to the Northern Railway’s Delhi Division. It is likely to run on an 89-km-long Jind-Sonipat section.
