Chandigarh: A woman intruder from Pakistan was shot dead by BSF troopers in the early hours of Monday in Punjab`s frontier district of Gurdaspur, a senior officer said.

Pakistan's border authorities later in the day refused to accept the body.

The woman, aged around 60, was shot dead near Bharial Border Out Post (BoP) around 3 a.m. when she refused to heed the warning to stop proceeding into the Indian territory, Border Security Force Deputy Inspector General R.S. Kataria said.

"BSF troops deployed at Bharial BoP in Gurdaspur sector observed suspicious movement of a Pakistan intruder who crossed the international boundary and entered the Indian territory.

"BSF troops challenged the intruder to stop, but she kept on moving towards the border security fence. Hence, BSF troops opened fire and the intruder succumbed to bullet injuries," the DIG said.

"The Pakistan Rangers were contacted to hand over the body, but they refused. The body was later handed over to Behrampur police station for the funeral," he added.

India and Pakistan share a 553-km international border in Punjab.
