Brendon McCullum breaks AB de Villiers' record of most consecutive Tests played since debut

McCullum achieved feat while appearing in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Seddon Park, Hamilton, of the two-match Test series.

New Delhi: New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum on Friday turned up for the 99th successive time since making his Test debut to break AB de Villiers’ record.

The record for playing most number of consecutive Tests since debut was previously held by South African de Villiers.

By chance, de Villiers' run stopped early this year during Proteas's Bangladesh tour, when he was granted paternal leave for the birth of his son and thus missed two Test match series.

McCullum, 34, achieved feat while appearing in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Seddon Park, Hamilton, of the two-match Test series.

In his 99th Test, the Dunedin resident won the toss and put the visitors into bat. At Stumps on Day 1, Lankans were 264 for seven with skipper Angelo Mathews not out on 63.

New Zealand won the first match by 122 runs in Dunedin, with McCullum making a quick-fire 75 off 57 deliveries thanks to 13 fours and a six in the first innings, then another 17 in the fourth innings.

McCullum made his debut in 2004 against South Africa in Hamilton, and coincidentally, the record was created in the same venue.
