Usman Khawaja defines mastery in Boxing Day Test

New Delhi: Usman Khawaja defined supremacy after his return to the Australian side post a hamstring injury which put weight on the team management’s decision to select him ahead of an in-form Shaun Marsh.

Khawaja struck a superb ton against the visiting West Indies at the MCG to dictate proceedings for the home team in the Boxing Day Test.

Khawaja put the onus of trust of skipper Steve Smith after striking a glittering 144 and sharing a 258-run partnership with Joe Burns to defy hapless Windies.

The Australian batsman had replaced an in-form Shaun Marsh as Steven Smith led side took a tough call in the given situation.

Khawaja had suffered a hamstring injury in Adelaide against New Zealand last month.

The Australia No. 3 batsman had been is supreme form after having scored two tons against the Black Caps earlier.

Khawaja marked his return to competitive cricket by slamming a century in the ongoing Big Bash League for Sydney Thunder. He struck an unbeaten 109* to show the selectors he is ready to take back his place in the side.

And rightly so he justified his selection as Australia pummelled the visitors with some ruthlessness. Khawaja’s confidence seems to have grown as it benefits his side given the solidity he has provided. The hosts will also be happy with Joe Burns who is shining up the order for them.

Marsh's omission also shows Australia's strength in the batting department as they are spoilt for choices. Khawaja will hope Boxing Day Test goes good for him as Australia gave him the perfect Christmas present in selecting him ahead of Marsh and he returned the favour on Saturday.
