New Delhi: Manchester United left-wing Luke Shaw underwent surgery on his injury and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his recovery from the broken tibia and fibula, according to the club.

"Luke Shaw underwent surgery on his injury on Tuesday night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery," the statement read.

The 20-year-old English defender suffered a double fracture of his right leg during United's 1-2 UEFA Champions League loss at PSV Eindhoven.

The game at Philips Stadion was held up for some 10 minutes as Shaw received treatment on the pitch from a posse of medical staff before being stretchered off with an oxygen mask over his face.

Shaw was surging into the box when he was hit with a crunching, double legged tackle from Hector Moreno. But the Mexican centre-back escaped censure from the referee. Interestingly, Moreno broke his leg during last year's World Cup in Brazil.

The Old Trafford club thanked everybody on his behalf for the wishes and messages.

"Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support," the statement added.

Shaw arrived in Old Trafford last June from Southampton in a £31m deal and has since made 20 appearances.

He is expected to be out of action for at least nine months.
