FIFA corruption scandal: Investigators seek life bans for Sepp Blatter, Michel Platini

New Delhi: Days after disgraced former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter announced his decision to appeal against his eight-year ban, in a latest development, the investigators are seeking longer bans for him and Michel Platini.

"The investigatory chamber intends to appeal against the decision for Mr Blatter and Mr Platini at the FIFA appeal committee," FIFA ethics committee spokesman Andreas Bantel told AFP.

The case is the latest in an escalating series of scandals since Swiss investigators detained several FIFA officials in Zurich on May 29.

In December last year, FIFA's ethics tribunal ruled both men had abused their positions over a 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million, 1.8 million euros) payment made to Platini in 2011 for work carried out between 1999 and 2002.

Blatter, who has headed FIFA since 1998, was also fined 50,000 Swiss francs while Platini, a FIFA vice-president, was fined 80,000 Swiss francs.

The court insisted there was "no legal basis" for the payment that Blatter authorised for Platini in 2011.

Then too, FIFA prosecutors had recommended a life ban for the pair, who had both denied any wrongdoing.
