New Delhi: In a shocking and sad news that surfaced is that a referee has been shot dead by a player for being sent off in an amateur match played in the Cordoba province.

According to reports in The Guardian, police in Argentina are searching for the footballer who was said to have retrieved a gun from his bag after being shown a red card. He was then reported to have returned to the pitch and shot 48-year-old referee Cesar Flores dead.

Sources claim that the entire incident happened during the football match.

A police source told the Efe news agency: “It all happened during the football match. We don’t know [exactly what took place], but it appears the player was angry, fetched a gun and killed him.”

Further reports said that the referee was shot three times, in the head, chest and neck. Another player, Walter Zarate, was also injured, but is understood to be out of danger.

Earlier in June last year, a match between Ferro and Tiro Federal was abandoned after a played punched a referee unconscious after being shown a yellow card.
