New Delhi: Joshna Chinappa on Monday added another gold medal to India's South Asian Games tally, beating Pakistan’s Maria Toorpakai.
While India-Pakistan sporting contests are always tense and dramatic, this duel was ill-tempered.
In order to prevent “intentional obstruction and dramatization of infringements,” chief referee Munir Shah was forced to step in during the final.
There was also a collison between the two that led to Joshna's racquet hitting Maria's forehead, causing a bleeding injury to the Pakistani.
“I play on the PSA tour and most of the girls there play fair and clean. And, that is the kind of game that I like to play. Unfortunately, today was not a nice game to watch. We both want to win but there is a way to win as well,” Joshna was quoted as saying by the Hindu.
The Indian eventually won the contest 10-12, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-7.
