Rio 2016 Olympics: PV Sindhu shows it's not always about Saina vs China in big events

New Delhi: While the Indian fans are heartbroken with India's overall performance in Rio Olympics 2016, ace shuttler PV Sindhu has given them a big reason to smile with her superlative show in the quarter-finals of women's singles.

Sindhu was up against a world class player, China's Wang Yihan, who is currently ranked 2 in the world.

But Sindhu has the reputation of being a giant killer and she held her nerves to pull off a spectacular win against the Chinese.

With great control at the net followed by attacking play, Sindhu defeated Yihan 22-20, 21-19 in straight sets.

With the win, Sindhu became only the second Indian women’s player to reach the semi-final of Olympic Games after Saina Nehwal reached the same stage at the 2012 London Games.

Sindhu also proved that Indian women's badminton is not only about Saina Nehwal.

Saina, who has demolished top Chinese players in several major events, was knocked out of Rio Olympics 2016 by World No. 61 Maria Ulitina.

Saina created history at London Olympics 2012 where she became the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the biggest sporting spectacle.

But lately, Sindhu has been emerging as India's new talent in women's singles and a medal at the Rio Olympics give her plenty of confidence.
