Lucknow: Om Prakash Singh will succeed Sulkhan Singh as the new Director General of Police in Uttar Pradesh. 

Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said: "On recommendations of the committee headed by UP chief secretary Rajiv Kumar, principal secretary home, and principal secretary to chief minister, the state government has requested Government of India to make available services of Om Prakash Singh presently posted as DG CISF to take over as DG Police".

"Till the new appointee takes charge, Anand Kumar, additional director general (Law and Order) will look after the day-to-day affairs." 

OP Singh is an alumnus of St. Xavier’s College, National Defence College and Delhi University and holds a Master Degree in Political Science, MBA in Disaster Management and an M.Phil degree from Madras University. He joined Indian Police Service in 1983.

He has held several positions of responsibility in UP and government of India addressing issues of internal security, crime investigation, law and order, intelligence and managing mega events like Kumbh Mela at Allahabad.

As Chief of Police at Lucknow, he is credited with displaying excellent negotiation skills in settlement of long-standing Shia-Sunni disputes over religious processions for which he was honoured by UP Govt in 1998.

As Director General of National Disaster Response Force, he handled successfully major disasters like J&K Floods, Nepal Earthquake, Cyclone Hudhud and Chennai Urban floods. During the 2015 Nepal Earthquake, Singh personally coordinated, oversaw and fast-tracked rescue and relief operations.

As an acknowledgement of his efforts to lead from the front in such disaster responses, IIT Delhi published a case study on his leadership and managing change at NDRF in 2016.

During his tenure, CISF became the first Central Armed Police Force to get Quality Excellence Award (2017) for Best Airport Security at World Quality Congress.

He has been awarded Indian Police Medal for Gallantry, Indian Police Medal for Distinguished Services and Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Services.
