Liam first auditioned for "The X Factor" UK as a solo artist in 2008 but didn't make it. He returned in 2010, and the judges grouped him with four other contestants (Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik) to form One Direction.
After being placed third on "The X Factor Show, "One Direction quickly gained a massive fan following and signed to Simon Cowell's label, Syco Music.
Their debut album, Up All Night (2011), was a huge success, with hits like "What Makes You Beautiful." This album marked their rise to global fame, marking them global teen icons.
Over the next few years, One Direction released five albums, each achieving worldwide commercial success. They became one of the biggest boy bands of all time.
Liam became known for his songwriting skills, co-writing many of One Direction's songs, including popular hits like "Story of My Life" and "Midnight Memories."
After Zayn Malik left the group in 2015, One Direction continued as a four-piece and released their fifth studio album, Made in the A.M. Post that, in 2016 the band announced a hiatus marking solo journeys for all four artists.
