Air China to resume flights to Pyongyang

Air China, the only Chinese airline that provides regular flights to North Korea, announced on Tuesday that it will resume flights between Beijing and Pyongyang from May 5.

Beijing: Air China, the only Chinese airline that provides regular flights to North Korea, announced on Tuesday that it will resume flights between Beijing and Pyongyang from May 5.

The service, that was started in 2009, will resume three weeks after the airline had stopped its twice-weekly flights between the two capitals on April 14, at a time of escalating tensions between North Korea and the US, Efe news reported.

However, a spokesperson for the company had then said the suspension had nothing to do with political problems but was due to a dip in ticket sales.

The number of Chinese tourists travelling to North Korea by train have also touched a record low, when tensions escalated in the region owing to exchange of threats and warnings between Pyongyang and Washington.
