This is what parents can do to help their child with autism

New Delhi: Do you have a child who has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)? For parents, it can be extremely tough to handle the day-to-day life of a child with autism, particularly, the four most challenging autism behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorders are a group of complex brain development disorders. These disorders are characterised by difficulties in social interaction and communication and a restricted and repetitive repertoire of interests and activities.

The four most challenging autism behaviors include – sleep disruption, food sensitivity, meltdown and aggressive behavior.

But as parents, you have an essential role in providing support to a child with an autism spectrum disorder. Parents can help to ensure access to health services and education, and offer nurturing and stimulating environments as their child grows up.

Recently, it has been shown that parents can also help deliver psychosocial and behavioural treatments to their own children.

As per the World health Organisation (WHO), 1 in 160 children has an autism spectrum disorder, which begins in childhood but tend to persist into adolescence and adulthood.

World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated every year on April 2 to clear misconception about the disorder and create more public awareness.
