Tata Steel, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian steel company to develop pipes specifically for hydrogen transportation. This breakthrough is a significant step towards India's clean energy goals and contributes to the country’s growing hydrogen infrastructure. The development of these hydrogen-compliant pipes is not just a technological achievement for Tata Steel but also a key moment in India's hydrogen mission, showcasing the company’s leadership in advanced steel manufacturing.

 

The hydrogen-compliant pipes are designed to safely transport 100% pure gaseous hydrogen at high pressures of up to 100 bar. This innovation was made possible by Tata Steel’s ability to manufacture the required steel at its Kalinganagar plant and process it at the Khopoli plant. The development of these pipes was done entirely in-house, which demonstrates Tata Steel's advanced technological capabilities and its commitment to contributing to the critical energy infrastructure needed for India’s green energy future.

The pipes underwent extensive testing at RINA-CSM S.P.A, an Italian agency known for its work in hydrogen-related testing and characterization. These rigorous tests confirmed that the pipes met all the necessary criteria for safely transporting hydrogen. This validation further emphasizes Tata Steel’s leadership in steel manufacturing for emerging clean energy technologies, confirming the pipes' reliability and safety in a high-stakes energy infrastructure application.

 

This achievement follows another significant milestone set by Tata Steel in 2024, where it became the first Indian steel producer to create hot-rolled steel specifically designed for hydrogen transportation. These continuous advancements showcase Tata Steel’s commitment to pioneering in the clean energy sector and supporting India’s transition to sustainable energy sources.

 

The achievement comes months after the passing of Ratan Tata, the iconic leader who shaped the Tata Group into a global powerhouse. Ratan Tata’s death in October 2024 marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire Tata Group's innovations and leadership in various industries. Under the stewardship of his half-brother, Noel Tata, the group continues to pursue bold and visionary initiatives like this one, maintaining its reputation for making a lasting impact on both the business world and society.
