New Delhi: Immediately after the 2nd Test between against England at Newlands came to an end, Hashim Amla announced his resignation as the captain of South African Test team.
After giving the shocker, Amla, who is a mainstay of South African batting line-up, stated that his decision to step down wasn't an easy one.
“This decision is not an easy one but I believe I can be of greater value to the Proteas as a fully focused batsman and senior player,” said Amla.
Amla, who returned to form in the 2nd Test by slamming a double ton in the first innings, thanked Cricket South Africa (CSA) for giving him the honour to lead the national side.
“I am deeply grateful and privileged to have been the Test captain and I wish to thank CSA for the honour of captaining my country.” added Amla.
Amla took the captaincy charge from Graeme Smith in mid-2014. And this on-going series was his sixth series in charge.
CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat respected Amla's decision.
“We respect Hashim’s decision and the manner in which he thought about it and then communicated with me.”
