New Delhi: Legendary Italian goal-keeper Gianluigi Buffon found himself out of the 2015 Ballon d'Or 59-player longlist, which was apparently leaked on Friday.
The official document is not to be released until next week, but the leaked list, obtained by Mundo Deportivo, has 59 names with regulars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among the shortlisted players.
But strangely, Buffon has failed to make the cut, even as Arsenal's David Ospina found himself in the list. Besides Buffon, who helped Juventus reached the UEFA Champions League final, England and Manchester City goalie Joe Hart's also failed to earn a place in the list.
Manchester City’s David Silva, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, Bayern Munich’s Philipp Lahm and Douglas Costa, Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and Arda Turan, and Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus also missed the cut surprisingly.
But Bournemouth’s Ghanaian midfielder Christian Atsu and Australian Massimo Luongo, who spent last season at League One outfit Swindon Town, have found themselves in the list to vie for the best player in the world.
The awards ceremony will take place in January of next year, and the list will be pruned to 23-man in December.
The annual football award given to male players by the game's world governing body FIFA , is regarded as the highest individual award. National team coaches and captains, as well as journalists from around the world vote to select player, considering the best performances from the previous calendar year.
The award has been dominated by Messi and Ronaldo, with the Argentine winning it for three successive years in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Portuguese Ronaldo won it in 2013 and 2014.
