Global COVID-19 cases crosses 121.7 million mark, India among worst-hit nation
The US is the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths. Brazil follows in second place with 11,780,820 cases and 287,499 fatalities. In terms of deaths, Mexico comes in third place with 195,908 fatalities.

Europe`s hospital systems are at risk of buckling under the strain of soaring COVID-19 infections that put the continent again at the centre of the global pandemic. Nearly two-thirds of U.S. states were in a danger zone of coronavirus spread. Authorities in countries from Poland to Portugal have expressed mounting alarm at the renewed crisis confronting their health infrastructure.

Belgium may need to return to full COVID-19 lockdown, says virologist
Belgium could be returning to full lockdown if there is no reversal of the surge in COVID-19 infections and hospital admissions, a senior Belgian virologist said. "We would then have to consider even more restrictive measures, which could resemble a lockdown like the one imposed in March and April," said Yves Van Laethem. Van Laethem, who addresses national news conferences on the COVID-19 situation, said only an eventual vaccine or effective treatment would overcome the pandemic.

WHO reports record one-day rise in global coronavirus cases
The WHO reported a record one-day increase in global coronavirus cases on Thursday, with the total rising by 338,779 in 24 hours led by a surge of infections in Europe. Europe reported 96,996 new cases, the highest total for the region ever recorded by the WHO. Global deaths rose by 5,514 to a total of 1.05 million.

France's new daily COVID-19 cases at all-time high, hospitalisations up
France reported on Wednesday a second daily record of new COVID-19 infections in five days, with almost 19,000 additional cases over 24 hours, while hospitalisations for the disease stood at a three-month high. French health authorities said there were 18,746 extra cases, versus a previous record on Oct. 3 of 16,972 and also sharply up from Tuesday`s tally of 10,489.

Dogs used to detect coronavirus in pilot project at Finland's Helsinki airport
Dogs trained to detect the novel coronavirus began sniffing passenger samples at Finland`s Helsinki-Vantaa airport this week, authorities said. This is a pilot project running alongside more usual testing at the airport. The dogs` efficiency has not been proven in comparative scientific studies so passengers who volunteer to be tested and are suspected as carrying the virus are instructed to also take a swab to confirm the result.

UK to host 'human challenge' trials for COVID-19 vaccines: Reports
Britain is planning to host clinical trials where volunteers are deliberately infected with the new coronavirus to test the effectiveness of vaccine candidates. So-called "challenge trials" are expected to begin in January at a quarantine facility in London, the report said. It added that about 2,000 participants had signed up through a U.S.-based advocacy group, 1Day Sooner.

Russia approves first COVID-19 prescription drug for sale in pharmacies
Russia has approved R-Pharm`s Coronavir treatment for outpatients with mild to moderate COVID-19 infections. The antiviral drug could be rolled out to pharmacies in the country as soon as next week, the company said on Friday. Coronavir`s approval as a prescription drug follows the green light for another Russian COVID-19 drug, Avifavir, in May.

Global coronavirus cases exceeded 30 million on Thursday, according to a Reuters tally, with the pandemic showing no signs of slowing. India was firmly in focus as the latest epicentre, although North and South America combined still accounted for almost half of the global cases. Global new daily case numbers reached record levels in recent days and deaths neared 1 million as the international race to develop and market a vaccine heated up.

Brazilian state of Bahia to test Russia's vaccine, plans to buy 50 mn doses
The Brazilian state of Bahia has signed an agreement to conduct Phase III clinical trials of Russia`s Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19. It plans to buy 50 million doses to market in Brazil, officials have said. The Russian vaccine is being developed by Moscow`s Gamaleya Research Institute and marketed by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).

Countries with significant active spread of coronavirus must prevent amplifying events, as opening up without the virus being under control would be a "recipe for disaster". WHO director-general recognised that many people are getting tired of restrictions and want to return to normality eight months into the pandemic.

Canada wants to be at 'front of line' for coronavirus vaccines
Canada reached an agreement in principle on Monday with both Novavax Inc and Johnson & Johnson for millions of doses of their experimental coronavirus vaccines. Canada`s two agreements follow separate deals with Pfizer Inc and Moderna Inc announced weeks ago. Canada is also in "the final stages of negotiations" to secure AstraZeneca`s potential vaccine and is in talks to secure more doses of the Pfizer vaccine candidate.

France reports 7,379 new COVID-19 cases, infection rate now exponential
France reported 7,379 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Friday, the most since it emerged from lockdown. Metropolitan France is now seeing an "exponential progression of the virus transmission", the health ministry said in a weekly review of the coronavirus situation.

First US COVID-19 reinfection case identified in Nevada study
Researchers for the first time have identified someone in the United States who was reinfected with the novel coronavirus. The report, published online, describes a 25-year-old man living in Reno, Nevada, who tested positive for the virus in April after showing mild illness. He got sick again in late May and developed more severe COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

New US COVID-19 cases drop for fifth week in a row, deaths decline
The number of new cases of the novel coronavirus reported in the United States fell 17% last week, the fifth straight week of declines. Nearly 1,000 people a day continue to die from COVID-19, though last week`s total of more than 6,700 deaths was down 9% from the previous seven days. The United States posted 297,000 new cases for the week ended Aug. 23, down from a weekly peak of over 468,000 cases in mid-July.

Brazilian state agrees to produce Russian COVID-19 vaccine
The Brazilian state of Parana on Wednesday reached a deal with Russia to produce a COVID-19 vaccine that Moscow has touted as the first to market. Parana had said it was in talks to produce the vaccine, although it was unclear if the institute would get the necessary regulatory approvals from Brazil`s federal government. The head of the Parana Technology Institute (Tecpar) would host a news conference to discuss the memorandum of understanding at 4:30 p.m. local time (1930 GMT).
