More quiet zones in high-risk indoor spaces, such as hospitals and restaurants, could help to cut coronavirus contagion risks, researchers have said. In efforts to rein in transmission, a reduction of 6 decibels in average speech levels can have the same effect as doubling a room`s ventilation, scientists said on Wednesday. The World Health Organization changed its guidance in July to acknowledge the possibility of aerosol transmission, such as during choir practice, or when in restaurants or fitness classes.

Spain witnesses worst COVID-19 week since late March, total tops 4,00,000
The country`s health ministry added nearly 20,000 infections for last week after revising upwards the number of cases for at least four of the days in that week. In the past 24 hours, 2,060 cases have been diagnosed, the ministry said, a lower level than seen last week. Three people died in the past 24 hours, with the total death toll at 28,872.

Hong Kong researchers record first documented coronavirus re-infection
The findings indicate the disease, which has killed more than 8,00,000 people worldwide, will continue to spread amongst the global population despite herd immunity, said researchers at the University of Hong Kong. The 33-year-old male was cleared of COVID-19 and discharged from a hospital in April, but tested positive again after returning from Spain via Britain on August 15. The patient had appeared to be previously healthy, researchers said in the paper, which was accepted by the international medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Pressure grows in France to tighten mask rules amid rise in COVID-19 cases
With cases in Paris rising particularly fast, police can now shut down cafes or any gathering of more than 10 people where distancing and other hygiene measures aren't respected. France recorded more than 2,800 new cases on Friday, up from a few hundred daily cases a month ago.

Germany reports biggest jump in new coronavirus infections since early May
The health minister warned of outbreaks in nearly all parts of the country due to holiday returnees and party-goers. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose by 1,226 to 218,519, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) showed. This was the biggest daily increase since May 9.

Coronavirus spread may get harder to control, says French PM Jean Castex
The public was becoming careless, Jean Castex warned, speaking shortly before health authorities said new daily infections were up by 1,397 in 24 hours. France has so far seen a total of 204,172 coronavirus cases. A health ministry statement also reported 15 new deaths in the hospital due to the disease, compared to an increase of 16 over a three-day period between Monday and Saturday, with the total death toll standing at 30,354.

New Zealand locks down Auckland after first local COVID-19 case in 102 days
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Auckland would move to level 3 restriction from noon on Wednesday as a "precautionary approach". New Zealand marked 100 days without a domestic transmission of the coronavirus on Sunday but warned against complacency as countries like Vietnam and Australia which once had the virus under control now battle a resurgence in infections.

In Chile, police trains dogs to sniff out coronavirus in early stages
Four dogs have been selected for the initial training, they are being trained at the Chilean Carabineros´ specialist training base in the capital Santiago. Sniffer dogs are best-known for detecting drugs, explosives and people but have also previously been trained to detect other diseases including malaria, cancer and Parkinson`s disease.

WHO reports record daily spike in global COVID cases for 2nd consecutive day
The World Health Organization reported a record spike in coronavirus cases across the world for the second day in a row. The WHO reported 71,484 new cases in the United States, 45,403 in Brazil, 34,884 in India and 13,373 in South Africa.
