ICG escorts immobile oil tanker MT New Diamond out of Sri Lankan waters
The tanker which was rendered immobile or ‘dead in the water’ after a severe blaze in the engine room is being towed by a team of salvors that have been arranged by the vessel’s owners. From its current position off Dondra Head, which is the southernmost point of the Sri Lankan coast, very large crude carrier MT New Diamond is headed for Fujairah, the largest port on the Eastern seaboard of the UAE. As per the ICG, Pollution control vessels, Samudra Pavak and Sumdra Praheri with an onboard helicopter and ICSG Shaunak with pollution response gear have been deployed to escort MT New diamond, an undertow at high seas.

No fire or smoke from MT New Diamond for over 48 hours
MT New Diamond the very large crude carrier (VLCC), that is held 50 miles off the Sri Lanka coast has neither been ablaze nor emitted smoke for over 48 hours. Due to the efforts of ICG ships and their Sri Lankan counterparts, the oil slick (diesel from the explosion) to the rear of the ship has also started disintegrating. Four Indian Coast Guard (ICG) vessels are on-site to closely monitor the situation.

Oil slick near MT New Diamond is from explosion, not cargo hold, say sources
According to the captain of the MT New Diamond and the salvors who are on-site, the slick was formed by the fuel which was powering the ship(from the tank) and was not from the cargo hold. This comes amid reports of an oil leak from the vessel. Structurally too, only the superstructure (tower) of the cargo vessel which houses the accommodation section is badly damaged owing to the blaze. The ships rear-portion(aft), as seen in the images has sunken(trim) about 3-feet into the water given the amounts of seawater and foam that was sprayed to control the blaze. A tea of salvors have also boarded the MT New Diamond for inspection and the appropriate course of action for employing larger tugs, as a part of salvage and towing will be undertaken. It is also said that the trim at the rear portion of the ship would be corrected.
