Okabe, who heads the Kawasaki City Institute for Public Health, also said Japan’s commercialisation and licensing hurdles involving drugs and medical products remain a ‘big problem’, as they could slow its response to health crisis such as pandemics. Japan has approved only one COVID-19 vaccine so far and about 0.9% of its population of 126 million has gotten at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, compared with 2.2% in South Korea or 36% in the United States, according to a Reuters tracker.

COVID-19: North Korea pulls out of Tokyo Olympics due to coronavirus scare
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula rose last month when the North resumed missile tests, although both sides said after the launches that they wanted to continue dialogue. The North made its decision to pull out of Tokyo at a meeting of its Olympic committee and Sports Minister Kim Il Guk on March 25, the ministry said on its website. North Korea says it has not had any coronavirus cases.

The Tokyo Games was originally scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020 but was postponed due to coronavirus. The Olympics in Tokyo is now slated to be held from July 23 to August 8 next year.

IOC president Thomas Bach sounds optimistic note on Tokyo Games 2021
The virus has maintained its global spread in recent months, casting a shadow over the viability of the postponed Games but Bach was optimistic about efforts to fight it. The Tokyo Olympics, originally scheduled for this summer, were postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Olympic Games are now scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 next year.

The Olympic flame will go on display at the Japanese Olympic Museum from September 1. The flame of Tokyo Games 2021 will remain on display from September 1-November 1. They have chosen to display the flame at the JOC museum, which is near the National Stadium purpose-built for the Games.
