Bengaluru riots:NIA arrests 17 SDPI members in connection with August violence
The SDFI is a political wing of the Popular Front of India. The investigation so far has revealed that a few SDPI leaders had conducted meetings at Thanissandra and KG Halli wards in Bengaluru in the evening of August 11. The investigation also revealed the use of social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp to spread terror among people.

Bengaluru riots: NIA conducts searches at 43 locations
The cases pertain to large scale rioting armed with lethal weapons causing injuries to police personnel, destruction of public and private property including DJ Halli and KG Halli police stations buildings and public and private vehicles. "The riot led to fear and panic in the nearby areas and was intended to cause terror in the society," said NIA. "So far, 124 accused have been arrested in DJ Halli PS case and 169 have been held in KG Halli PS case," said NIA.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB), which was investigating the violence on August 11 in Bengaluru over an alleged inflammatory post on social media, has filed a primary charge sheet in a local court. The name of former Congress mayor R Sampath Raj is also included in this charge sheet.

NIA arrests key conspirator in connection with attack on Bengaluru P
The NIA arrested a key conspirator for his involvement in the attack on KG Halli Police Station in Bengaluru that took place in the late evening of August 11. The attack resulted in huge damage and destruction of public and government property, including damage to the police station building and vehicles parked. The accused, 44-year-old Sayed Saddiq Ali of Bengaluru, works as a recovery agent with a bank and was absconding since August 11 immediately after the riots.

NIA takes over investigation of Bengaluru riots that took place in August
The large scale violence occurred when over 1000 people gathered in front of the house of Congress MLA Naveen Srinivas Murthy (Pulakeshi Nagar constituency) in Kavalbyrasandra wherein the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act had been invoked by the State Police. The mob was protesting against the derogatory social media (Facebook) post about Prophet Mohammed made on August 11, 2020, around 4 pm by the nephew of the MLA allegedly insulting the religious sentiments of the Muslims. The State Secretary of SDPI, Muzamil Pasha had earlier called a meeting and directed the members of PFI/SDPI to instigate the mob and incite violence after the incident.

Karnataka HC appoints claims commissioner to assess damage to properties
The Karnataka High Court on Friday appointed a retired judge as the Claims Commissioner for assessing the damage caused to properties by the rioters. The rioters went on a rampage torching a Congress MLA's house and two police stations in Bengaluru. The court was passing orders on the state government's plea for the appointment of the Claim Commissioner to fix the liability on the rioters.

The imposition of Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in areas under DJ Halli and KG Halli police station limits has been extended till 6 am on 18th August. Section 144 does not allow the gathering of four or more people at a place. In a related development, Bengaluru Police said on Sunday (August 16) that 35 more accused were arrested in connection with Bengaluru violence that broke out on August 11.
